How to Select a USB Flash Memory Card Reader

A USB flash memory card can be used for a variety of purposes.  For everything from transferring data, to taking pictures, flash memory cards are becoming a popular standard.  One of the easiest ways to copy data on a flash memory card is to purchase a USB memory card reader.  These devices have the capability to read flash memory cards, and make transferring pictures and data extremely easy.  Although what would seem like a simple purchase, there are a few important considerations you should keep in mind when purchasing readers for flash memory cards.

The first consideration to keep in mind when purchasing a reader is compatibility.  You want to select a flash media reader which will be able to read the format which you already use in your digital camcorder or digital camera.  Formats are not compatible with each other, although there are multi-format readers available.  These devices offer the ultimate in flexibility and future compatibility, as they will be able to not only read your current media format, but also that of your future digital camera.  In addition, if a friend or relative visits you, they will be able to download pictures from their digital camera onto your computer.

Another important consideration to keep in mind when purchasing a USB flash memory card reader is the interface speed.  There are two different speeds of USB devices: USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.  USB 1.1 has a maximum transfer speed of 12 Mbps (or twelve million bits per second, roughly the speed of transferring a floppy disk's contents per second).  USB 2.0 has a maximum transfer speed of 480 Mbps (or four hundred and eighty million bits per second, roughly the speed of transferring 42 floppy disks per second).  As you can see, the speed of USB 2.0 will allow you to transfer the contents of your flash memory card much faster than USB 1.1.

Another important consideration is whether or not to purchase a card reader made by a reputable manufacturer.  Although generic devices do exist, they are often of lower quality than devices made by high quality manufacturers.  Generic companies include Memorex, Geek Squad, and Atech.  Mainstream manufacturers include SanDisk, Cruzer, PNY, Crucial, Lexar, and Sony.

Once you have selected your ideal USB memory card reader, you will be able to easily transfer pictures from your digital camera or camcorder.  Using Windows XP, this process is more than easy.  Once you insert your camera card, a wizard will allow you to copy pictures, print pictures, or email pictures.
