Considerations to Keep in Mind When Selecting a USB Disk Drive
Firewire connections are often used instead USB interfaces in mobile disk drives because of its higher speed. Nevertheless many external hard disks use USB connectors and several drives are equipped with both Firewire and USB interfaces. Today, some external disk drives can store up to 1 TB. Most users don’t need that large storage capacity, but it can be useful for large backups.
Often, when you see an external drive, the capacity of that drive is 50 to 500 GB. External disk drives are transportable. However, the larger drives are not as slick as the smaller ones and can’t be carried around in a small bag. This is a trade-off with the disks of larger the capacity and easy mobility. Is mobility more important to you, or capacity?
Similar external disk drive based models are made by many different manufacturers based on the USB interface. Since this drive will probably hold important information, you should select a name brand manufacturer. Name brand manufacturers include LaCie, Western Digital, Toshiba, Seagate, Maxtor and Iomega. Since the hard drives are only as good as the quality of the disk media on the device, you should always select a name brand manufacturer over a generic manufacturer if you value the data on the drive. If you are just using the device to move files from one computer to another, or to hold digital media temporarily, you may not be as concerned with data integrity.
The number one feature of these disk drives is its data capacity. When selecting a drive, you should always keep in mind what your current needs are, and then double that capacity. For instance, if you are looking for a drive which will store 100 GB of data, you should select a drive no smaller than 200 GB. The reason for this is because your needs often change and it is best to plan ahead. In addition, the speed of a drive is also very important. The external disk drives should be USB 2.0 compatible, do not select an older USB 1.1 device. The reason for this is because USB 2.0 is much faster than the older USB 1.1 standard. Selecting the right capacity drive and the correct speed drive will ensure future happiness with your purchase.
If you follow the guidelines pointed out, you should have no problem selecting a USB hard disk drive which will last you at least two years. Since technology changes rapidly, capacity of external disk drives will always be changing. It is best to select a large capacity drive from a tried and proven manufacturer, while still keeping a small physical size. The combination of all of these features will guide you to the perfect removable disk drive.
