Use Remote Backup Services As Your Data Storage.

There are many remote backup services available on the Internet.  How to select the best online backup service is a daunting task.  What is important to your needs for a remote backup service?  Do you need software to automatically backup your important files to this service's server?  Do you need a large data storage space?  Do you need optional server support, for a large server that stores critical business data?  These are important considerations to keep in mind when selecting a backup service.

If you are looking for simplicity with remote backup, look no further than StoreMyPC.  StoreMyPC's greatest benefit is that it regularly backs up the data on your computer- in the background.  Using secure transmission technologies (128 encryption), StoreMyPC creates backups of your important data while you sleep or work.  In addition, restoring data is easy with StoreMyPC.  You can either use the built-in software, or you can also order a CDROM for an additional charge.  In addition, StoreMyPC uses a proprietary method of creating incremental backups, so that as a file is changed, StoreMyPC only copies the information that has been changed.  StoreMyPC is available for a free 30 day trial from http://storemypc.net.

If you are looking for the ultimate in data storage space (and already use another backup program) there is another alternative to using a proprietary backup service- use a web hosting company.  If you use a web hosting company to store your backup file, you can guarantee that you will have plenty of space to store backups.  In addition, since there will be no traffic on the site (other than you uploading files), there will be no bandwidth charges.  Another nice feature of using this method of remote backup is that you can also have your own email address, and website.  With web hosting plans starting at less than $5/month, using a web hosting company can make perfect sense.  The only downside to this approach is that you will have to use FTP to copy the large backup files (and make sure to either password protect the files, or encrypt them).  An example of a good webhosting company is Blue Host, which is available at http://www.bluehost.com/.

Another important consideration when going through a large list of backup services is whether or not the backup service has a backup client which supports server environments.  Certain server applications, such as Microsoft Exchange, cannot simply have their internal databases copied from one location to another.  If you were to do this, Exchange would not be able to start up after the database has been restored from a backup set.  This could mean disaster!  To get around this issue, use a backup software which is Exchange aware.  The only problem with this is that Exchange aware backup software typically runs in excess of a thousand dollars per license.  A way around having to pay these large costs is to simply select a backup service that supports Exchange.  An example of a backup service which allows you to copy Exchange databases is Data Protection Services, available at http://www.dataprotection.com.

Regardless of which of the many available remote backup providers you select, your data will be much more secure with an off site backup plan.  Should a disaster strike, your data will be secure.  With this added peace of mind, you will be able to trust in your data backup and restoration plans completely.
