Online Data Storage on the Cheap.

Online computer data storage is perhaps the biggest thing to happen to backup technology recently.  With higher Internet access speeds, many companies and individuals are electing to store their data backups off site, at a remote location.  Instead of traditional means of copying these large backups (such as using the mail system), many people and companies are using their Internet access.  However, many online data storage providers typically charge a large amount of money for the same thing that you can get elsewhere for cheaper.  As long as you already use your own backup software, you can often get the same size of storage space, for much che Online computer data storage is perhaps the biggest thing to happen to backup technology recently. As long as you already use your own backup software, you can often get the same size of storage space, for much cheaper!

The first and most popular means of setting up your own online data backup is to use a webhosting company as the storage provider.  Most webhosting companies offer a large amount of space and bandwidth for a very low price.  Taking advantage of this, you will be able to store your full and incremental backups very cheaply.  This would be the ideal solution for a business, which typically has large backups.  Once you encrypt or password protect your backup files, you can access those backups practically anywhere on the globe that has high speed Internet access.

Another alternative for businesses and individuals with large amounts of data to backup is to use a colocation facility as your online storage provider.  By using a colocation facility, you can have a spare server on the Internet that will store your backup files, similar to a webhosting provider.  The main advantage to having a colocated server is that you will have complete control over the server, and typically have more bandwidth allocated to the server than with a webhosting company.  The main advantage over having full control over the server is that you can guarantee that the server and your backup files will be secure against outsiders.  In addition, it is also easier to setup an encrypted way of transferring the backup file.  Using SSH, your file can be copied to the colocated server using 128 bit encryption.

If you have ever downloaded a song off of the Internet, you have probably used the next means of remote online storage, P2P.  P2P, or Peer to Peer, is a technology that allows individual users on the Internet to share files and information.  Using this technology (and client software, such as Limewire), you can copy backup files to another computer on the Internet.  This solution is typically only recommended for individuals, as your backup files would be available to anyone else using that client.  However, if you have a friend, you can download each other's backup files.  This saves both money and time, as it is easy to share files back and forth.  One caution with this solution- make sure to always password protect or encrypt your backup file, since anyone using that particular P2P client  can download your backup file.

These online data storage solutions are all better than the traditional means of paying an online storage provider too much money.  Whether webhosting, colocation, or P2P best meets your needs, these alternative remote data storage solutions will all protect your data just as well as traditional providers, at reduced prices.
