HD Data Recovery Methods And Software Products
When performing HD data recovery, it is necessary to use the proper software to recover data. GetDataBack, available from Runtime Software allows you to recover data from a corrupt partition, or to recover deleted files. This utility can also help recover files from a hard drive which has been formatted. This utility can work around physical hard drive problems, as well. In order to use this utility, you must first remove the faulty hard drive, and place it in a computer that is running Windows. This way, the computer can save data from the bad hard drive onto the good hard drive. GetDataBack is available in both NTFS and FAT versions. Runtime Software also offers RAID Reconstructor a data recovery and analyzing tool for RAID Level 5 or RAID Level 0 Arrays.
Another software program option available is to use a bootable CDROM for the hard drive data restoration. Knoppix, available for free, is a powerful Linux distribution which is more forgiving of hard drive errors than Windows. If a drive cannot be read in Windows, download Knoppix and try it on the host computer. An advantage of Knoppix is that Knoppix can copy files from a bad hard drive, to a USB flash drive, eliminating the need for another hard drive to copy files onto. With Knoppix, the bad hard drive will appear as an icon on the desktop, as will the USB flash drive. Using simple drag-and-drop copying, the files can be moved from the bad hard drive to the USB flash drive in a matter of a few clicks of a mouse. If Knoppix cannot read your hard drive, you may have to move on to hardware-based data recovery methods.
If software cannot read from a bad hard drive and it has crashed, one solution remains available- use hardware-based recovery methods. These methods, while crude in appearance, are known to revitalize bad hard drives long enough so that data may be recovered. The first method is to place a hard drive within two clear sandwich bags (which seal with an airtight seal at the top), and place the bad hard drive in the freezer for a few hours. This will condense the hard drive platters, allowing a possibility for the drive to be successfully read from. The next method is to gently apply a small shock to the hard drive, which will reseat a misaligned hard drive read/write head. This is accomplished by holding the hard drive about one inch above a hard surface, and letting the hard drive fall to the surface. Perform this task on every side of the hard drive, and this will allow the read/write head on a hard drive to temporarily re-align itself. With both of these methods, make sure to immediately copy any data off of the hard drive as soon as the drive is able to be read from. These methods, while a last resort, can only be performed a number of times before a hard drive will fail completely.
If you are still unable to read data from a hard drive, one last hard disk data recovery option is still available- to hire an expert from a data recovery service company to recover lost data from the faulty drive. Most hard disk recovery centers charge at least $1,000 per attempt to recover data, so keep this in mind when considering this option.
Hopefully, you will be able to recover and retrieve data successfully from your faulty hard drive. Once you have your data transferred onto a known good hard drive, be sure to backup your data regularly, to prevent future tragedy.
