How to Replace a Hard Drive from Western Digital

A hard drive always has the possibility of breaking, and that is exactly why it may become necessary at some point to replace a hard drive from Western Digital.  However, this is not an easy task.  In order to replace a faulty drive, you must first determine that the hard drive is dysfunctional, and whether or not the drive is covered under a warranty from Western Digital.  Once this is determined, you can only then replace your hard drive.

Western Digital has a simple process to determine if a hard disk drive is dysfunctional.  You should first download the Data Lifeguard tools, which will test any manufactured hard drive by Western Digital.  The Data Lifeguard Diagnostic will tell you quickly if your hard drive is dysfunctional.  There are Windows versions of this utility, as well as traditional DOS based versions.  Once you have determined whether or not your hard drive should be replaced, you should consider if it is covered under Western Digital's warranty Western Digital guarantees that their drives will be free of defects for three years.  If your hard drive is less than three years old, you may be eligible for a free replacement.  You should call Western Digital at 1-800-275-4932.  If your hard drive is not covered under a warranty, you will have to select a replacement drive.

Selecting a replacement hard drive from Western Digital is relatively easy.  To do this, first determine the size and type of hard drive which is to be replaced.  For instance, if you currently own a 20GB IDE hard drive, you will want to replace it with an IDE hard drive of equal or greater capacity.  There are three main types of hard drives: IDE (also called EIDE, ATA, or PATA), SCSI, and SATA.  These three types are not interchangeable with each other, and great care should be taken to select the proper drive.  Once you have selected a replacement drive, you should now install the drive into your computer.

Installing a hard drive is not for the faint of heart.  First, you must determine how to open the computer case.  Usually, there is a side panel on the computer which can be removed in order to replace parts inside of the computer.  Once this panel is removed, locate and remove the old hard drive.  Make sure to pay attention to the jumper settings on the old hard drive, as they should be duplicated on the new hard drive.  Once the old hard drive is removed, insert the new hard drive, and replace the side panel on the computer.  Following the instructions which came with your new hard drive, re-format the hard disk in a format that your Operating System can understand.  You have now successfully replaced a faulty hard drive!

Once your hard drive is successfully replaced, make sure to make frequent backups of your hard drive, to prevent any data to be lost from your hard drive.  However, should any other hard drive fail, you will now know how to properly diagnose, find a replacement, and replace the actual hard drive.
