Hard Disk Repair Software

Hard drive repair software is a complex type of computer software.  Unlike most other applications, you often have only one attempt to recover data from a corrupted or otherwise bad hard drive, since a corrupted or dysfunctional hard drive is extremely sensitive.  Thus, you should be aware of the top hard disk repair software available on the market before you have to learn the hard way.  Here the focus is on the most popular disk repair software, and the individual differences between them.

Hard Drive Mechanic, by Higher Ground Software, is a recovery software designed to recover from primarily software-based failures.  Hard Drive Mechanic is capable of recovering from corrupted partitions, corrupted sectors, and other software-based failures.  Hard Drive Mechanic is ran by first downloading the suite onto a functional computer, and then running the program on the affected computer via a floppy disc that the software creates.  Hard Drive Mechanic supports both FAT (older Windows 9x style formats), and NTFS (newer Windows 2000 and XP formats) formats.

GetDataBack, by Runtime Software, allows you to recover data from any software failure.  Supporting both FAT and NTFS file systems (there are separate versions for each file system, allowing a price break for FAT file systems), GetDataBack is able to recover data from corrupted partitions, as well as deleted and corrupted files.  In order to properly run GetDataBack, you must first remove the corrupted hard drive, and install it in a computer that has a functional version of Windows.  Using the functional PC, you can then analyze data on the corrupted disc, and recover the data to the functional PC.  GetDataBack also works for removable media such as camera cards (use the FAT version), and removable flash drives.  Runtime Software also features Raid Reconstructor, to recreate RAID arrays, should your RAID array fail.

R-Studio, by R-Tools Technology, is perhaps the most feature-rich hard disk repair software available.  Featuring support for FAT, NTFS, Ext2 and Ext3 (popular Linux based file systems), and UFS1/UFS2 (FreeBSD and OpenBSD based file systems), R-Studio is capable of recovering data from most partition formats available.  In addition, R-Studio contains a built-in RAID reconstructor.  Perhaps most unique with R-Studio is the ability to recover data from corrupted or bad sectors on the hard disk drive.  R-Studio allows you the ability to recover the entire drive to a good hard disk drive, and then scan that hard drive for missing data.  This gives you the ability to recover data from a damaged hard drive, while the hard drive is still capable of reading data.  For advanced users, R-Studio is even capable of backing up data over a network, giving maximum flexibility.

Although all of these disk repair software titles are excellent for backing up data from a software-based failure, sometimes it requires an expert to recover data from a hardware-based failure.  Ontrack Data Recovery, available at http://www.ontrack.com, offers a hard disk recovery service which can often recover data even if the hard disk itself is damaged.  Usually, this service ranges from $1500 to $2500, depending on the exact service needed.  This service is a last resort to recover extremely sensitive data that the above utilities cannot recover.

Regardless of which repair software or service you use, it is always important to create regular backups of your data.  An old saying rings true with data backups and data recovery: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
