Creating a hard disc image can be achieved through the use of a suitable program

The system of a computer is usually the most important part of the computer that needs to be cloned or copied to make sure that most of your important data or files are safe since the computer works mainly through its system. The computer system is usually saved in the computer’s hard disk which could be corrupted by virus that would lead to a system crash and permanent data damage, so it is important to keep a copy of your hard disk to avoid difficulties in restoring your important files. This is the process of creating a hard disc image of the computer system through disc imaging.

A hard drive image is a storage device or a single file which contains the complete structure and components representing a data storage medium or device such as tape drives, CD/DVD/BD, floppy disk, key drive and hard drive. Disk imaging is usually created by making a complete sector-by-sector clone of the source medium or hard drive copying the structure and contents of a storage device. Instead of using disc imaging some hard disk image utilities uses the archive file which is the skipping of unused file space from the source media or simply compressing the disk they represent to reduce storage requirement. Creating a disc image can be achieved through the use of a suitable program; these programs have different capabilities which focus mainly on disc imaging including optical media imaging for CD/DVD images or hard drive backup, restore and roll out.

Disc imaging refers to the process of copying the contents of a computer hard disk to another disk or hard disc copy. This process is usually done by writing the contents of the first disk to an image file and loading it to the hard disc image. This is useful in transferring your system or data to a disk with a larger capacity or in restoring your system to a virgin installation.

Here are some of the major disc imaging applications that are widely used:

Forensic imaging: Imaging is done by cloning the entire drive contents to a file and calculating the checksum values to confirm the originality of the image file. These images are called forensic images which are generally acquired with the use of software tools.

Drive Cloning: This process is also used in creating a hard disk image and is typically used to copy the contents of the hard drive for use in another system. Drive cloning only requires the copying of file structure and the actual files itself and is usually done through the use of software-only programs.

Data recovery imaging: This process is somewhat similar to forensic imaging which requires imaging of every single sector on the main drive to another disc image from which required files can be retrieved.

Data recovery imaging usually requires the ability to pre-configure hard drives such as working with unstable drives allowing it to read data from bad sectors or unstable drive which is caused by mechanical wear or other issues. Read instability is usually a major factor when creating disk image for drives in operating system such as Windows.

A usual operating system is has a limited capability with drives that take a long time to read, so a separate hardware control of the main hard drive is required to achieve the full spectrum of the hard disc image for a better disc imaging.

A hard disc image is an exact copy of your hard disk information including all the files and folders, the operating system and even the partitions.  To do a hard disc image is to use a disc imaging software.  There are many disc imaging software in the market today and below are among them.

Handy Backup™ Professional 6.7
This backup software allows you to copy everything on the hard drive to a CD/DVD, through LAN or even Online.  This is good for users who want the backup encrypted and compressed.  The Handy Backup™ Professional 6.7 edition also features a disc imaging capability which clones the hard drive creating a hard disc image.  In times when your old hard drive fails, you can restore everything including system settings with your hard disc that has an image cloned using this software.

R-Drive Image 4.7
R-Drive Image 4.7 is a disc imaging software which provides the user an imaging capability.  This is great for duplicating whatever is on your old hard drive and that is of course including the operating system you are using as well as the partitions you have created.  This software is very helpful at times when you hard disc fails due to virus infection or hardware malfunction.
