Find Free Online Backup

Having a online backup plan is the ultimate in backup security.  Should something happen to your home or workplace (such as a fire or other natural disaster), the data stored on the free online backup provider will still be secure.  After all, your computer can be replaced by your insurance company.  However, the price of the data on your computer is priceless.  To protect this data against any disaster, you should backup your data to a host on the Internet.

In the early nineties, there were many online backup providers for free.  However, these businesses have either failed, or changed their business models since then.  They all had to realize that when you provide a free online storage service, it is hard to pay the bills related to operating such a business.  Thus, there are no more true online backup services for free left.  Most will try to pressure you to upgrading your account (since, after all, they are not making any money off of your account), and some will display annoying advertisements on your computer's web browser in order to access your account.

There is, however, a real way to get a online backup service for no cost.  Most people already have access to a free service, but they do not realize it.  Most of the time, your Internet Service Provider will allow you FTP access to store a small amount of data (such as 15 MB).  This will allow you to move your backup files to your FTP space.  One important aspect to keep in mind if you are planning on doing this is to encrypt, or password protect your backup file.  That way, if someone on the Internet were to download your backup file accidentally or on purpose, they will not be able to read any of the data contained on it.

One big disadvantage of using your Internet Service Provider is the small data backup storage space.  Another way to get a free online backup service is to have a friend and yourself store each other's backup files on your own hard drives.  That way, should something happen to your computer, your friend will be able to bring over your backup file.  Encryption and password protecting your data may not be that big of a concern, depending on how strongly you trust your friend.  One obstacle with this, however, is transportation of the data backup files.  How do you easily send the file to your friend?  Email?  Email is too slow, and often your Internet Service Provider will limit the size of emails that you can receive to less than 20 MB.

One way to get around this problem is to use popular Peer to Peer (or P2P) software to transfer the file to your friend, and vice versa.  By starting up a popular P2P application (such as Limewire, available at http://www.limewire.com), you can share each other's backups easily.  Password protection and encryption with this method is an absolute must, as other members of the network will be able to download your backup file just as easily as your friend will.  By naming the file something unique, such as Backup_data_for_your_friend's_first_name, your friend will be able to easily search for your data backup file, and download it.

By creating and updating your backup file online, you are protecting against the worst possible disaster- a disaster which not only destroys your computer, but also possibly your home.  These disasters are more common than most people think, and can range from floods or storm damage to fires.  By utilizing the tips outlined in this article, you will be able to prevent even the worst catastrophe from taking your precious data away.
