The Pros and Cons of Using a Firewire USB Converter
The primary reason for using a Firewire USB conversion device is convenience. With just a simple adapter, you can attach modern devices to a regular USB port. In addition, the converter does not require you to open your computer in order to attach a modern peripheral. If you have never installed a card in a computer before, it can be a quite intimidating process. In addition, some laptops require expensive add-on cards which are only compatible with newer laptops. For older machines, a Firewire USB converting device can make perfect sense.
A disadvantage with using this type of converter is that with the converter, the maximum transfer speed of the device is lowered. Since the converter has to convert from a Firewire signal to a USB signal, there will be quite a performance hit with using a converter. In addition, a Firewire card is just as expensive (or rather, inexpensive) as a Firewire to USB device. If you want the ultimate in speed and performance from your Firewire device, do not use a converter. Instead, a Firewire card would be a good choice. For newer laptops, there are even Firewire cards which will allow a Firewire port to be installed. In addition, converters end up causing headaches when you are trying to troubleshoot issues with a device. For instance, if you call for technical support on a device, no hardware manufacturer will support the device. They will instead inform you to connect the device to a Firewire port. This can cause headaches later on.
Whether you are looking for speed, or ease of use, a Firewire USB converter may or may not suit your needs. If you are looking for a way to quickly get a Firewire device to work over USB, this device may work for you. However, if you are waiting the maximum speed that Firewire offers, steer clear of this adapter. Whether or not this device is the right selection for you depends on your needs, and your needs alone.
