All drivers are rated with X numbers, which represent a multiple of the original speed of the specification for reading and for writing. So, in other words, you should be looking for high X values.
With DVD burners you can not only write and read, but you can also rewrite them. However, in order to be able to rewrite, you have to make sure the CD and DVDs that you are using are rewritable ones. For this to work the DVD burner must support either CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW which are all rewritable standards. And of course the CD or DVD must themselves be of the right RW format.
When analyzing the possibility of purchasing either a DVD or a CD burner, you should definitely keep in mind that DVD burners are able to read and write both DVD and CD disks, while a CD burner can only work with CDs.
Most DVD burner will be delivered together with a DVD burning software so that you will be able to watch DVD movies on your computer and even with authoring media features. With most DVD burning software you will also be able to take backup of files from your hard disk.
