Two options in making a backup are through online backup and using external hard drive backup.
In this way, your data will be stored in the external backup hard disk and not in your computer. This is like a zip disk where you can store the information in folders. Labeling is important so you would know what files are stored in it. Come to the point that your computer is inaccessible, you can still access your data through your external hard drive and continue working.
You might be confused on which brand of hardware you are going to purchase though these external disk are just similar. You can choose the amount of storage space you want to have. Most of the time, these storage device has more disk space compared to your normal computer. Investing to one is really worth it and the cost is just minimal. If your computer will be having issues, it will be easier for you to backup data and time will not be wasted and you can still be able to retrieve files if it’s deemed lost. Having a good quality disk as your external drive is a good idea. You don’t want to invest in a cheap disk and later on regret for using a low quality device.
Though there are many affordable removable backup hard drives with big storage capacity and is easy to use as it is like a plug-and-play device. However, there are those that you really need to install some softwares but it will just take less than an hour. Once you’re done with the installation, you are good to go in using the external drive as a backup resource.
Since people today are so dependent to computers, these make it more significant in our daily living. So as a recommendation, it is good to have precautionary measures in protecting your data. Prevention is better than losing files and not able to recover it at all. Once you plan ahead for things like this, it will help you save money, time, and effort in the future.
External Hard Drive Vs. Online Backup
Among the two, which is best preferred? The answer is, it depends on your affordability and capability. Though presented below will be the pros and cons of the two options.
Of course, the number one factor considered by many is the cost of having the backup. If you choose to have the external hard drive, you will then need to buy the drive and some softwares needed for it to run. For a 1TB drive, it will cost you around $100. However, if you prefer to have the online backup method, it might cost you around $5 per month or depending on the kind of service you are getting. Some web based data storage companies have their own quotations for corporate and individuals accounts.
One type of backup is called a full backup in which everything is copied from your computer to the backup resource. If you are using an external backup drive, the process will normally take a few hours. But in an online backup, it will normally take days or weeks. So it is recommended that if you have the online backup option, you can start backing up your most important files and the least important ones will follow later on.
Once you are done with the full backup, the succeeding process is called incremental backup which will only backup files that have changed. This will take perhaps less than an hour or it depends how big the change is.
The reason why others prefer to have the online backup process is because of safety and security. It could be safe from theft, natural disasters (flood, fire, tornados), and other physical damage. In the event, there is a physical destruction and you have your files saved on external hard drive and it is also part of the damage, then everything is useless at all. Most online backup providers have added features to make if very convenient for their customers like the ability to share files, remote access, and synchronization for files between networks of computers.
So the decision to get an online backup or external backup hard drive is still with you as you now the pros and cons of the two options.
