You can perform all sorts of tasks with a DVD recoder, such as creating or playing audio CDs, copy games, playing or burning DVD movies or simply backing up your PC data. If you compare the capacity of CD media which store 640MB, DVD media has been designed to hold much larger data capacity with 4.7GB. With prices of DVD burners falling sharply, the DVD burner are becoming the preferred optical drive among home PC users.
While shopping for a DVD recoder there are two things to consider:
- The type of drive.
- The drive’s speed.
DVD drives that are sold today support at least one of the CD-R/RW or CD+R/RW format. The re-writable DVD formats are incompatible with one another. Check and make sure if you buy DVD recoder that the DVD media it supports is also readable on your new DVD drive. The original DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM formats are backed by the DVD forum (an organization that was formed by 10 music, film and electronic companies to develop a common standard). While DVD Alliance (Dell, HP, Philips, Sony and others), have pioneered the competing DVD+R/RW alternative. Table below summarizes the compatibility of Recordable DVD Standards.

It may be observed that although all the five recordable DVD formats roughly offer 4.7GB storage capacity, they differ in some subtle and some not so subtle ways.
- DVD-R and DVD+R discs because of their high reflective backing offer high compatibility with optical drives and DVD players.
- DVD+RW and DVD-RW can all write and erased about 1,000 times, but they are not compatible with some DVD players.
- Sturdy DVD-RAM can be re-written up to 100,000 times, although it's a slower media, and can’t be played back on most drives or Set-top players.
One way to reduce the consumer’s dilemma as to which DVD recoder to buy are current multi-functional DVD-R/RW Super DVD drives like LG’s GSA-4040B and Plextor PX-708A that supports both DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW disc formats and offer a universal recording platform.
Most DVD burners are internal built devices for stand alone desktop computer as well as for notebooks. Another option is external DVD burners which use USB or firewire connection for high data transfer.
Writing Speed
In general the burners perform the read operation much faster than write operation. Faster writing by the drives are achieved by writing on Recordable Discs than if the writing is made on Rewritable Discs. Current DVD burners support maximum writing speed of 8X.
Speed ratings are also specified on the recordable media: 2X, 4X, 8X, 12X, 16X etc. So while purchasing the drive one should look for the best media that match the speed ratings of the drives in order to obtain maximum write operation optimization from the drive.
Many types of DVD software for backup and data copy are available in the market. They write quality VCD or DVD and can be stored for many years.
With the help of DVD software you can keep copies of your DVDs, you can store DVD data onto the hard disk or onto another CD. This secures and stores computer data using a DVD recoder and also popular movies.
DVD burning programs uses advanced technology to reproduce and burn video data in CD or DVD format.
Watching video on your pc computer would be difficult without a DVD reader since the video data size is large and storing video on a hard disk would consume up a lot of space on the hard disk.
