A Comparison of Disk Partition Utility Software

There are many different types of disk partition software tools available, both in retail stores and online. Whether you are looking to reclaim disk space by deleting a spare partition, or whether you are wanting to create another partition for another Operating System, the disk partition utility software that comes with many Operating Systems leaves much to be desired for user friendliness and features. Instead, you may want additional features, or a user friendly disk partition solution. Here you will be given a brief overview of some of the more popular utilities available, and will also get the outline for their main strengths and weakness There are many different types of disk partition software tools available, both in retail stores and online. Here you will be given a brief overview of some of the more popular utilities available, and will also get the outline for their main strengths and weaknesses.

Paragon Partition Manager, by Paragon Software Group, is a powerful disk partition utility that is also easy to use.  Featuring support for browsing file systems that Windows itself cannot read (such as Ext3, Ext2, JFS, etc), Paragon Partition Manager will be able to copy data back and forth between your Operating System and your extra partitions.  In addition, Paragon Partition Manager also contains support for resizing NTFS file systems while Windows is still running- increasing your system uptime and availability.  With the Power Shield technology, Paragon Partition Manager will ensure that even if power is lost to the system during partition resizing (normally this would mean a loss of all data on that partition), the system will resume exactly where it left off- preventing data damaging errors.

Perhaps the most popular partition utility is Partition Magic, by Symantec.  Partition Magic includes support for resizing a NTFS file system while Windows is still running, as well as support for all of the popular file systems.  Partition Magic also includes a built in boot manager, which can be helpful if you have more than one Operating System installed.  In addition, Partition Magic also includes support for external hard drives (USB or Firewire).  Partition Magic includes a user friendly interface, with most operations guided by a simple wizard.  .

If the above hard disk partition software seems like it is overpriced, there is a free disk utility that is worth looking into.  Super Fdisk, by Ptdd Software, is a partition creation and resizing utility that has most of the features of the above titles.  However, it is not user friendly, and it cannot resize NTFS partitions while Windows is running.  A nice feature of Super Fdisk, however, is that it can create backups of your partition information, and master boot record.  That way, should there be a problem with the resizing process, Super Fdisk can restore those changes.

These three partition utilities allow you to select the right utility for your needs.  If you want a feature-rich utility that will create any type of supported partition, and allow you to resize partitions while Windows is running, Paragon Partition Manager might be right for you.  If you are looking for a simple way to resize partitions, Partition Magic might be the best choice for your needs.  However, if you are mainly interested in saving money, and are comfortable with using a program without a graphical interface, Super Fdisk will be more than adequate.  Which partition utility software you select depends on your needs, but all of these utilities are excellent.
