Computer data storage devices could be convenient to use as portable memory devices
Many people find it easy to transport data if stored in a device. Besides its use of transferring data from one computer to another, computer data devices are also used mainly to back up data or store them to prevent data loss in instances when computer crashes.
Below are the common data storage devices and their descriptions:
Floppy Disk. A floppy disk is an example of a data storage device which is read and written by a floppy disk drive. It is a thin flexible medium of magnetic storage that is incased in a square plastic shell. The floppy disk was invented in 1969 by IBM and was widely used from the 70s to the 90s, as time passed the need for more competent devices were increasing so the floppy disk was replaced by devices which are faster and have higher memory capacity.
Compact Disk. A compact disk is an optical plastic disk which is used to store digital data and is commonly known as a CD. A standard CD with a diameter of 120 mm can hold up to 700 MB data which is way more than a regular floppy disk could hold. Compact disks were introduced in the market in 1982, and a series of CD’s were created for computer and entertainment uses as well, examples of these are the CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, SVCD and Enhanced CD. Among these the CD-ROM and CD-R are widely used for computers.
Hard Disk Drive. A hard disk drive is a type of computer data storage device which can retain the data stored in it even without the use of powered device making it a non-volatile storage device. It can store digitally encoded data on rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. The first types of hard disk drives were a removable form of data storage but were later changed to a sealed unit with fixed media. The first hard disk could store up to 5MB data but newer types could store up to 100 gigabytes which makes it a better option to use as storage for back up data.
Flash Memory. Another achievement in the field of computer devices is the creation of flash memory. This type of storage device is very useful in storing and transferring back up data as it can be electrically programmed or erased easily. The flash memory is also an example of a non-volatile memory in computer technology and is commonly used nowadays as USB flash drives and memory cards.
USB Flash Drive. This device is one of the best examples of flash drives as it is smaller compared to the floppy disks but has a much higher storage capacity. It can store data from 64 MB to 128 GB and can allow as many as 1 million write cycles and erases which is better than the regular floppy disk. Not only can you store a lot of data using this computer storage device it is also very useful as safe storage for important back up data.
These are more or less the evolution of the external devices used by the computer. External devices are very handy and you can take them everywhere you go if you do not have a laptop. You cant bring your computer anywhere you go, can’t you?
