Back Up Programs Available for Free!
My Own Backup is perhaps the most powerful of all free backup software programs. My Own Backup offers the ability to copy data onto removable storage drive such as CD-R discs, Zip discs, Jaz drives, or even onto floppy diskettes. My Own Backup also offers compression, allowing you to store more data onto your backup device. For instance, if you are backing up your hard drive data onto CD-R discs, and your backup data size is just over the capacity of the CD-R, normally you would have to insert another CD-R to complete the back up process. However, My Own Backup allows you to compress and burn that data onto a single CD-R. My Own Backup also allows you to password protect your backup archives, to help you to increase data safety and security. If you are confident with a command prompt, My Own Backup even offers the ability to create custom backup scripts, with its command line support. My Own Backup is completely free.
SmartBackup is the most convenient of all of the available free backup programs. By completely automating incremental backups (a type of backup that only backs up the files that have changed since your last backup), SmartBackup allows backup jobs to run quicker, which means the less time that you spend staring at a progress bar on your computer monitor. SmartBackup also supports compression, and the ability to mark a file for backup just by right-clicking on it (which means that you don't have to spend time opening SmartBackup, and then editing your existing data backup, and then adding that particular file). This makes SmartBackup the most convenient application for backing up data that is available for free. Were that not enough, SmartBackup also allows you to easily upload and transfer your data backup to a FTP server on the Internet, which will allow you to recover and restore your data no matter what happens! SmartBackup is also available for a charge, which allows you to receive technical support on how to use the product.
Also worth mentioning with other free backup programs for PC’s is Microsoft's own free built in backup utility, which is included in Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and XP. This backup utility, once installed from your Windows CDROM, can be accessed by selecting Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Backup. Perhaps the only benefit of Microsoft Backup over the other free backup programs mentioned is that Microsoft Backup is usually already installed on your computer. Microsoft Backup is not the best solution and is a hard to use utility for advanced features. This includes incremental backups, and does not have reliable compression support.
Regardless of which backup utility you select, the most important thing is that you regularly backup and make copies of the data from your computer. All of the compared backup programs mentioned in this review will allow you to easily backup your data to prevent tragedy. Note, these free backup solutions don’t support backup to DVD and BlueRay.
