Using backup devices is the easiest way to have safe backup data storage

Storing important data is one of the most useful feature of a computer as it helps us store important files that we’re working on as well as important personal files, so keeping a back up of these data is as important as saving a copy of your computer system in backup devices. Backup data storage is one of the most important thing that needs to be considered in storing important data as it will allow us to transfer important data and files to a new computer host without the fear of losing important data. This can be achieved with the use of reliable backup devices for back up data storage such as CD’s, DVD’s, USB, and portable hard drive devices.




Creating a backup is the process of copying data from one computer host to backup devices for data transferring and storage. Aside from this, backup copies of important data and files may be used to restore the original files in case of data loss or damage. Data loss is very common especially with the use of different external devices and internet computers can acquire viruses that could destroy its system or data stored in it. Having a backup could be very useful in restoring your computer system to its functional state in case it will be affected by computer viruses and it could also restore small number of files that have been accidentally deleted or corrupted.

A data repository model can be used to provide structure for the backup data storage. In the modern era of computing there are many different types of backup devise that are useful for making backups. There are also many different ways in which these devices can be arranged to provide geographic redundancy, data security, and portability. Since a backup system contains at least one copy of all data worth saving, the backup storage requirements are considerable. Organizing this storage space and managing the backup process is a complicated undertaking. But with the use of backup data software and system plus reliable backup devices creating a backup and going through the backup process can be done none the less.

Many different techniques have been developed to optimize the backup procedure. These include optimizations for dealing with open files and live data sources as well as compression, encryption, and de-duplication, among others since before data is sent to its storage location, it is selected, extracted, and manipulated. 

Here are some examples of backup devices that can be used for backup data storage:

Magnetic Tape:

Magnetic tape has long been the most commonly used backup device for bulk data storage, backup, archiving, and interchange in backup data storage because tape has typically had an order of magnitude better capacity/price ratio when compared to hard disk, although recently the ratios for tape and hard disk have become a lot closer. A principal advantage of tape is that it has been used for this purpose for decades (much longer than any alternative) and its characteristics are well understood.

Tape is a sequential access medium, so even though access times may be poor, the rate of continuously writing or reading data can actually be very fast. Some new tape drives are even faster than modern hard disks. There are myriad formats, many of which are proprietary or specific to certain markets like mainframes or a particular brand of personal computer.

Hard Disk:
 
The main advantages of hard disk storage which are very useful would be low access times, availability, capacity and ease of use. External disks can be connected via local interfaces like firewire, USB, or via longer distance technologies like Ethernet, or Fibre Channel. The main disadvantages of hard disk backups is that they are easily damaged, especially while being transported and their stability over periods of years is a relative unknown. Some disk-based backup systems, such as Virtual Tape Libraries, support data duplication can dramatically reduce the amount of disk storage capacity consumed by backup data so it is still considerably useful for backup data storage.

Optical Storage:

 Blu-ray Discs are also used as a backup device for backup data storage; it increases the amount of data possible on a single optical storage disk. Blu-ray discs can store massive amounts of data and be more cost efficient than hard drives and magnetic tape. Some optical storage systems allow for cataloged data backups. A recordable CD can be used as a backup device as well. CDs can be restored on any machine with a CD-ROM drive making it more reliable and advantageous. Although writable CD-ROMs are not always universally readable recordable CD’s are relatively cheap. Recordable DVD’s are also used as medium for storing important data. Since most optical disk formats are WORM type, this makes them useful for storing purposes since the data can't be changed. Other rewritable formats can also be utilized such as CD-RW or DVD-RAM.

In keeping a backup data storage, reliable backup devices is needed.  Backup devices may include portable hard drives, multimedia drives, USB among others.  It is very important to backup critical information to storage devices so that if in case the hard disk fails or if the data is accidentally deleted, you still have the chance to recover the data from your backup devices.
