oktober 1, 2006 18:40 - Collaboration Results in Holographic Storage for Consumers
Ikegami and InPhase Technologies will soon be releasing a 300GB holographic storage device destined mainly for large video files. The 300GB external drive will have a disk size of 130mm and a shelf life of around 50 years. Ikegami's spokesperson stated that this technology will be applicable in the broadcast and entertainment industries with the current trend of moving towards high definition television (HDTV). The new drive will allow users of Ikegami's Editcam and Editcam HD camcorders to seamlessly transfer their videos. The basic principle behind the holographic drive is that there are two substrates with recording material between them. Recording is done with a blue laser. oktober 4, 2006 01:14 - SteelVine is SI's Latest in Storage Processors
In their new generation of storage processors, the SiI5723, SiI5734, and SiI5744 have added several innovative features: USB 2.0 host interface, drive locking to protect data, single button backup, and an expansion element that allows users to simply add more drives to get an increased capacity. The expansion capability is based on eSATA technology and allows users to daisy-chain up to 3TB of storage. Including a USB 2.0 interface allows people using legacy USB ports to take advantage of this new technology. Needless to say, drive locking protects users' data by requiring a password to access the drive. The SATA ports on the new processors all operate at 3GBS and conform to the SATA 2.5 specifications. oktober 6, 2006 22:44 - IBM Protects Consumer Privacy through New Encryption Technology
The new storage system TS1120 by IBM meets a need in the market to protect consumer data for small, medium, and large businesses as well as complying with the new legislation requiring businesses to disclose any compromise of sensitive data. Basically, the new system is a tape drive that can encrypt data along with processing non-encrypted data. The encryption and decryption is done through a key system based on prior IBM mainframe technology. There are a variety of management methods for the encryption - Application, System, or Library. All come with software bundles to assist the user in easily managing the data. oktober 9, 2006 13:54 - A Tour of DPM
Data Protection Management (DPM) is a complicated task with the various means of encrypting (disk archiving, tape backups, snapshot technologies, replication, etc.) and protecting users' data. To properly manage these vast amounts of data, there must first be an analysis of all the individual components.DPM solutions provide a wide variety of reporting and analysis tools to maintain and improve the performance of data storage networks. With new regulatory requirements, companies need to be able to produce data when required as well as to keep data safe. Predictive analysis is another aspect of DPM useful to businesses: this concept would allow companies to know ahead of time when there could be a data storage problem. oktober 12, 2006 21:50 - Data Center Management Difficulties
Not only do data center managers have to worry about encryption and purely IT issues, they are now confronted with power consumption problems, lack of physical space, cooling, and facilities management. The power consumed by a server rack has increased exponentially between 2000 and 2006. Finding real estate for installing new centers is becoming an issue for companies - they have found solutions by making smaller servers with less power hungry processors. These smaller processors also reduce the cooling and power consumption problems. Managers can use directly attached and liquid cooling systems to deal with problem areas in their network. oktober 16, 2006 01:11 - MySQL Gets Own Backup Software
Since mySQL databases are so prevalent in the market (approximately 32% of server databases), Zmanda (an open source backup software producer) recently released a data backup and recovery tool specifically for mySQL databases. The Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) provides various backup and recovery features such as local and remote configuration support, automatic scheduling, options complying with government regulations, smooth integration with pre-existing backup tools, and backup monitoring and analysis. Zmanda offers a free "community" version as well as a paid enterprise version of their software. The enterprise version starts at 50USD and goes up to 500USD. oktober 18, 2006 20:31 - Newspaper Owner Aided by Symantec's Storage and Protection Tools
Copley Press, a newspaper conglomerate based on the West Coast of the United States, has adopted several products by Symantec to improve and streamline their IT operations. After implementing Symantec's CommandCentral Storage, Copley now saves 10,000USD per terabyte by improving its storage resource allocation and by being able to bring its storage online faster. To simplify management of their email system, Copley uses Symantec Enterprise Vault. The Enterprise Vault archives emails in a more centralized, safe, and secure way so that the company can recover data more easily. LiveState Recovery has allowed Copley Press to restore a server in an hour instead of eight, resulting in a major savings in IT expenditures. Verisign's NetBackup provides standard backup and recovery protection. Newspaper Utilizes Symantec Storage Enterprise Vault
oktober 22, 2006 18:20 - Consumers Beware: Privacy Loss Rampant
Identity theft has become more known since the legislation passed in 2005 that required companies to reveal when there was a potential security breach of their private data. Name, income, Social Security numbers, and credit card numbers are just some of the data that is being compromised, according to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (PRC). Although high tech, hacking techniques do cause information to be stolen, generally, simple forgetfulness or theft are the main culprits. Even though lost backup tapes or stolen laptops comprise most sensitive data exposure, certain e-commerce businesses could feel the effects. Consumers are more cautious about giving their credit card and other private information to less known companies More on identity theft threat
oktober 31, 2006 13:41 - Revivio Demonstrates their New Data Backup and Protection Solutions
At the conference, Storage Decisions Fall 2006, Revivio will show their software suites, Application Integration Suite (AIS) and Continuous Data System (CDS). The AIS bundle includes software to help automate protection, replication, and recovery of data from small scale nightly backups to worldwide recovery operations.Revivio's CPS works tightly with AIS to provide data recovery at any point - data can be restored from any time after it was created in just a few minutes. Company officials remind us that with the current trend in compliance legislation, corporate mandates, and litigation, the need for quick and efficient backup is essential.
