augusti 19, 2006 16:30 - Online Backup Service for Macintosh by Clunk Clink
Clunk Clink is offering new software that targets Macintosh users on the move. They recently announced a data backup service that takes the data from your computer, encrypts it, and backs it up daily to an online (and therefore, offsite) storage area.OnLinePro for Mac OS X allows users to retrieve their stored data from any computer connected to the internet instead of relying on more vulnerable CD, tape, or external hard drives. There is a simple interface to store and backup files that involves choosing the files and the time when they should be backed up. Maintosh Online Backup Service from Clunk Clink
augusti 21, 2006 17:08 - Open-Source Online Storage Solutions
Cleversafe Project is currently developing an online data backup solution that divides the user's data into "slices" that are then dispersed throughout the internet. To the user, the storage system appears as a mountable file system..Parity codes are included with the slices to help restore the data, and actually not all slices are needed to restore data. The data can be recreated with just a majority of slices. The system is more secure since each slice individually means nothing. Another online storage and back up solution using dispersed storage grids is Amanda and Zmanda, its commercial counterpart. augusti 23, 2006 18:02 - Asheville, NC Attracts Data Backup Companies with new Broadband
With its new fast internet connectivity, Asheville is starting to bring in more businesses based on technology. Considering its relatively remote location (compared to major metropolitan areas), the city is ideal for data storage and backup companies interested in protecting their critical data from potential terrorist attacks and natural disasters. Netriplex Corp, an international internet tools company, decided to move its network operations center to this peaceful area of North Carolina. More data recovery companies are expected to come into the area due to the high speed internet connection as well as Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI). Since PARI is situated in a remote location, it has the potential to host backup data for companies as well.Asheville, NC an attractive center for data backup companies
augusti 25, 2006 12:29 - A Range of USB Storage Drives by Sony
Sony recently began shipping its latest line of USB storage devices, the MicroVault Tiny, ranging from 256MB up to 4GB. These USB flash drives also come in a range of colors corresponding to the size of the drive, starting with orange for the smallest drive and going up to purple for the largest. In addition to the variety of colors and range of storage sizes, the physical size is rather small. The storage drive is as thick as a coin, as wide as a finger, and about as long as a paperclip. The USB drive comes with software to expand and compress files automatically, which increases the storage capabilities. More On Sony's USB drives USB Data Storage
augusti 27, 2006 11:49 - InPhase Technologies and Hitachi Maxell to Build Holographic Data Storage
The main principle behind holographic storage is that data will be stored in three dimensions, instead of two, thereby increasing storage capabilities by more than 10 times a HD-DVD for approximately the same size footprint. A single disc will store approximately 300GB of information with the potential for 1.6TB by 2010. Unfortunately, since this holographic technology is so new, the equipment will be rather expensive: around 15000USD for the reader/writer and 150USD for the discs. This storage solution will target businesses who are interested in large-scale data backups. Mass market solutions will involve a smaller disc to store around 75-100GB of data on something about the size of a postage stamp. Plans For Holographic Data Storage
augusti 29, 2006 22:21 - IBM Scientists Show Molecular Data Storage Possibilities
Recently, scientists working on molecular data storage were able to demonstrate the feasibility of using a single molecule to store binary information. The specially designed 1.5nm molecule can be flipped between "on" and "off" states. These states can then be detected and are determined to be stable. Since traditional CMOS technology will soon hit its limits, new data storage technologies will have to be developed. Considering the size of current storage schemes, molecular storage will drastically reduce the size of future information storage technologies. Also, molecular electronics will be more stable since the synthesis process is chemically controlled, creating identical molecules. The molecular memory data storage future?
