InPhase is a spin-off research company formed in 2000that claims to have a breakthrough in holographic memory recording.

Holographic memory storage technologies have been research a long time. The possibilities of having a medium that can store huge amount of data have brought a big interest to this field.

InPhase have developed a method using a holographic storage medium which is possible to manufacture. It can hold 300GB of data on a DVD disk like medium and the prototype records at a speed of 20MB/s.

It uses a device called spatial light modulator (slm) to transfer the digital data to the holographic medium from a blue light laser. This creates a holographic pattern.

The current device can only write and create a holographic pattern once on the medium. This makes it practical for storing library information and for storing digital films. This product are planned to be released through OEM channels next year.

They are also working on creating a rewritable holographic product. Their target for a working a rewritable breakthrough is in 2007.

This information was accident leak from a PowerPoint presentation on Google's Web that they planned for an online backup service GDrive. But was quickly removed and replaced with an edited version.

This have created a lot a speculation on Google's plans among storage business experts and giving rise to security and privacy issues.

The GDrive service is likely an online storage service capable to store 100% of the user's data. The notes said that the storage will be for infinite storage of emails, pictures, bookmarks and web history etc. accessible from anywhere.

Not a new idea as online storage is offered by a number of companies, but Google have unprecedented muscle to make a real impact and market visibility. If Google introduce this product it is not clear if this will be for the consumer market and / or for the small and midsize market (SMB).

Iomega Corporation just released Iomega REV Loader 280. Iomega is a leader in products on data storage.

The Iomega REV Loader 280 is a new desktop autoloader for small business backup and archiving. The Iomega REV disks are utilizing the latest removable technologies. To that Iomega have created an autoloader which provides for 280 GB (569 GB compressed) of backup by manage up to 8 removable 35 GB REV disks in a compact desktop at half the price as competing automation tape products.

The autoloader connects to servers with a USB 2.0 interface making it easier to use than if it was equipped with SCSI-based tape backup. Included with a purchase is a license for CA BrightStor, ARCServer Backup for Widows and support for disaster recovery.
The REV Disk can handle up to 25MB/s in data transfer which outperforms any alternative DAT-72 or DDS-4 tapes backup costing half as much.
