Network Appliance new push includes new virtual tape libraries (VLT) added to their NearStore family.
The NearStore VTL600 single head and NearStore VTL1200 with dual head mimic tape libraries which gives the added advantage of disk storage while offering the cost benefits given by tape storage.

VLT can serve disk to disk backup for a range of systems including Hitachi, EMC and IBM. By using "tape smart sizing" it saves 50% space compared to other VTL's.
The data is encrypted by using the Decru DataFort Appliance. This protects the tapes from illegal decryption of the data is sent by currier.

The VTL600 can scale from 4.5TB to 84TB with a maximum of 256 virtual tape drives. The VTL1200 can scale from 9TB and up to 168TB while emulating a maximum of 512 virtual tape libraries.

The ratio between the use of online tape backup to disk capacity is today 1.5. Last year it was 2.0. This result was achieved after a survey of 2000 IT managers. This is revealed in third edition of the Backup and Archive User Perspective Report.

This will result in that disk usage will exceed tape usage for archiving and backup within the next 2 years. The average time to perform full backup have decreased over time. Today 32% of IT managers manage to take less than 60 minutes to perform a full backup.

The most pressing need from the IT managers are for high capacity, high archive reliability and long time archival retention.

The new disk to disk based SonicWall CDP Solutions series box was introduced at the RSA conference in San Jose, California on Feb 13.
This is the first re-branding of products from their acquisition of Lasso Logic made in November 2005.

The product backs up data to the locall network as well as to an offsite location.
Any time the disk is written to, be it someone hitting a document or a database transaction is being made, this information is instantly replicated on to the SonicWall CDP Series.

The CDP solution performs AES 256-bit decryption and only save changes on the files. The recovery device can protect data stored on PCs servers and laptops.
