Backup Storage Technology News And Information Blog

Data Backup And Storage : Data Backup News Blog : januari 2006

januari 1, 2006 02:15 - Development of DAS and IP SAN data storage technologies.

Today's small businesses often use simple storage architectures with their data systems.
It is called Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) and is based on a having the storage contained inside the server or by having a tape drive plugged to the server.

Other systems such as SAN or NAS are commonly only used in larger businesses.
For SAN the cost in both in hardware cost and labor with a full IT staff can be huge.
However cheaper IP SAN is a technology which uses the Internet Protocol (IP) is gaining momentum as a storage solution.

This technology have lower cost than traditional SAN, is easier to use and offer sufficient performance for many business applications.
Last year NetApp was the leading supplier of IP SAN followed by EMC.
Microsoft now plans to enter his market and will soon offer a Windows 2003 Server based on simple SAN.

januari 6, 2006 17:06 - New high capacity data storage 3-D nanotechnology to transform data needs in the future

Will high capacity data storage based on holographic nanotechnology replace current magnetic data storage?

President of Colossal Storage Corporation Michael E. Thomas think so! With over 30 year in the data storage business his company is researching into a new storage technology based on nanotechnology which uses ferroelectric molecular optical storage to read and write data in 3D

Present day magnetic data storage is currently nearing its reach of its limit capacity. With this method the data are stored in a 3-dimensional molecular level by based on atomic switch state changes. The storage capacity will be increased 1000 fold based in the technology compared to the current magnetic storage disk drives.

Although the are many technical questions before any commercial product reach the market based on this photon/laser induced electric field poling nanotechnology concept, it have the potential to transform the way data storage is made in the future.
